Circle Sept 3 on your calendar for LSU at Oregon … A Duck win and it’s clear sailing to the national title game with only a Nov 12 road trip to Stanford blocking their path. No team in the Pac-12 South can match up with the Quackers in the inaugural conference championship. Conversely, a win by LSU means a lot, but they’ll still need to get past West Virginia on the road and then the SEC’s three A’s – Alabama, Auburn and Arkansas.

Most of the match-ups this week are pretty clearcut. I’m going out on a limb and picking Maryland at home over a demoralized Miami squad. I’m also breaking from the crowd and picking Army to upset Northern Illinois in DeKalb. If Dan Persa was healthy enough to play at full speed – he is doubtful this week – I would pick Northwestern over Boston College and their thin secondary without any hesitation. As it is, I am doubting my decision to call for a Wildcat win.

Top 5 Quirkiest Match-ups This Season:
BYU at Mississippi
Why? Bronco Mendenhall told CBS Sports’ Brett McMurphy this summer that the current corruption in college football “absolutely” can be attributed to the huge amount of money made by coaches, especially the SEC, where 10 of 12 earn more than $2 million a year.
Oregon vs LSU
Why? Both Les Miles and Chip Kelly paid Texas based recruiting consultant (read: middleman) Will Lyle for recruiting information. Miles paid just over $5 grand for a report Lyle generated. Kelly paid $25 grand for similar information, and ended up signing a couple blue chip Texas high school athletes that Lyle claims he influenced. Kelly also bought himself a sweet NCAA investigation in the deal.
SMU at Texas A&M
Why? The Aggies are leaving the Big 12 and the Mustangs are begging the conference to let them take A&M’s place.
San Diego State at Michigan
Why? Brady Hokes left the Aztecs at the end of last season and now they’re coming to haunt him in Michigan Stadium.
UCLA at Utah
Why? Former UCLA and BYU offensive coordinator Norm Chow hosts his former employer in Salt Lake City.

Bruce Feldman Leaves ESPN for CBS Sports
“Swing Your Sword” by Mike Leach and former ESPN college football columnist Bruce Feldman is a great read, thanks to Leach’s offbeat stories and Feldman’s skillful writing.
Feldman was suspended by ESPN for taking part in the book – after they approved his involvement! Now, he’s with CBS College Sports, writing and commenting on camera. Get the scoop on ESPN’s behind-the-scenes manipulations regarding the Leach lawsuit and book.

Why Didn’t Texas A&M Start Their Own TV Network?
I don’t know about you, but I’m scratching my head and wondering, “Why didn’t Texas A&M just start their own TV network like Texas did? Why does it seem they like they’re having a meltdown in the sandbox and don’t want to play with the neighborhood kids anymore?”
This article claims Texas invited the Aggies to join them in creating a TV network several years ago and A&M rejected the idea. By the time they changed their minds, Texas had determined they could make it work on their own.

The gentlemen representing the University of Texas are downright polite and respectful about their opponent this week. And it’s not because they’re coming off an incredibly humbling 5-7 campaign, just one year removed from playing in the national title game.
In UT’s Monday press conference, Brown and his players said a lot of nice things about Brigham Young University’s football program. Of course, they don’t want to provide any bulletin board fodder, but their respect has more to do with the way Brown approaches the game more than anything else. He expects his student-athletes to respect the opponents they square up against each week – and to earn their opponents’ respect in return – because that’s the way you respect the game of football. Several key non-conference match-ups will give us a better snapshot of where the season is headed this weekend. Games like ‘Bama at Penn State with the ghost of the Bear watching over Happy Valley; the old school classic of Notre Dame and Michigan; the SEC’s outgoing champion Auburn vs. the New Miss Kids on the Block, and independent BYU at could-be-independent-before-the-season’s-over Texas. Cougar Sportsline editor H. B. Arnett is predicting a 38-17 Brigham Young win over Texas in Austin this weekend.
The Cougar defense is very good this year and they’ll take care of business for as long as possible this Saturday, but in the end, I expect the offense to choke and sputter along the line of last week’s performance, which will eventually tucker out their faithful band of defensive-minded brothers.
This game will be a fairly low-scoring affair because Texas’ offense is still a work in progress, too; so, I’m calling it 20-13 or 20-10 in favor of UT. More >
