CG365 Sweet Sixteen – Week 1

Oregon jumped 16 spots on the strength of their 72-0 dismantling of New Mexico. Admittedly, the Ducks were vastly underrated in my preseason poll. Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas all dropped slightly after anemic performances in their season openers. Boise State moved up to #2 after outlasting fellow Super 16 member Virginia Tech, 33-30. The Broncos have  a red carpet stroll to an undefeated season with nothing but Western Athletic Conference foes and a jittery Oregon State squad (0-1) remaining on their schedule.

Week 2 Game Picks

There are only five games this week where there isn’t a consensus pick for the winner.

Looks like I’m really going out on a limb with my Florida St. pick.

4th and inches … Week of Sept 6 – 11

Can this kid get some pocket protection? UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel is lucky Kevin Prince is quick and shifty—and durable. The speedy sophomore signal caller is relying on an offensive line that’s a far cry from what the Bruins expected to field back in spring practice. It’s pretty amazing Prince was sacked only twice by Kansas State last weekend.

UCLA’s offensive line casualty list:

  • Xavier Su’a-Filo started every game at tackle as a freshman in 2009. He is now serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Jeff Baca started every game at guard last year. He was declared academically ineligible and is sitting out the entire 2010 season.
  • Kai Maiava is out for the entire season following surgery on his fractured left ankle. Maiava started 12 games at center last year.
  • Nik Abele was a redshirt freshman that was expected to replace Su’a-Filo at tackle. He was forced to end his football career because of neck injuries.
  • Stanley Hasiak was a sophomore who saw action in three games last season. He was expected to be a part of the OL rotation this year but he was ruled academically ineligible.
  • Mike Harris is a junior tackle that played in the previous 18 games. He sat out last week vs. K-State for violating team rules. He should be back on the gridiron this week vs. Stanford. For Prince’s sake, we hope so.

You’ve heard plenty about Terrelle Pryor, Ryan Mallett, Andrew Luck and Jake Locker, but here are three game-changing signal callers that you need to know about:

Week 2 Pick Results

Well, I was right. I did go out on a limb with my Florida St. pick.

I also overlooked the fact that Air Force’s record against BYU in September is 5-6, but 2-18 in all other months.

Besides, it was 9/11 Remembrance Day.  Should’ve went with the Falcons.
